Guardian Ventures does not recommend installing 8mm engineered stone surfaces directly over solid timber or butcher’s block worktops.
The reason is simple: wood is a living, dynamic material. It naturally expands, contracts and can warp as temperature and moisture levels change throughout the year. Unlike timber, engineered stone is a rigid, dimensionally stable material that is designed to remain unchanged. When these two very different materials are permanently bonded together, the natural movement of the timber can create significant stress within the engineered stone, increasing the risk of cracking or failure over time.
Solid timber worktops can also develop slight bows, cups or twists as they age. Engineered stone requires a continuous, perfectly supported substrate beneath its entire surface. If the underlying timber is no longer perfectly flat, the engineered stone may be forced to bridge unsupported areas. Should a heavy object then be dropped onto one of these unsupported sections, the impact is concentrated rather than evenly distributed, significantly increasing the likelihood of the surface cracking.
Moisture is another important consideration. Timber worktops require regular maintenance and protection to prevent water ingress, particularly around sinks and taps. Overlaying solid wood prevents routine maintenance and can trap moisture between the two materials. Over time, this may cause the timber to swell, rot or develop mould, ultimately compromising the stability of the installation.
For these reasons, Guardian Ventures recommends installing our engineered stone surfaces onto stable, moisture-resistant substrates, such as laminate worktops, high moisture-resistant chipboard (HMR Chipboard) or moisture-resistant MDF (MR MDF). These materials provide the rigid, dimensionally stable foundation required for a successful, long-lasting installation.
